My Russian lady has a child. What can I expect?
If you lady has a child or even two living with her you will need another bunch of papers first. You will need to get acquainted with them as well. The problems can arise are common for any marriage with children from previous unit. But in general Russian children will adapt very fast to new lifestyle and language. Some things will be astonished because of cultural differences. But also take into consideration that you lady and child (children) also has the same emotions because of changes. You have decided to be together and now you have to learn to live new life.
Russian children may help or take care of house: cleaning, wash dishes etc. for this culture it is quite normal. Such tradition has appeared maybe thanks to economical situation in FSU countries where both fulltime working parents.
Though household duties lie on girls’ shoulders rather than on boys. Such duties are meant as “girls’ stuff”. Though American women do not divide duties on sex difference.
It is common thing when Russian lady and her mother stay in contact. In some cases her mother lives with her. As usual it is a retired lady who takes care of home (cleaning and making food, serve the table) and child (children) while mother is on work. Children usually call mother’s mother babushka. Babushka also helps grandchild (children) with their school lessons in some cases.
Here we have considered a family when there is no father. When there is a husband, spouses prefer to live apart parents like a separate family. Though family traditions are strong still and the whole family celebrates birthdays or some other holidays all together.
There is a significant difference between American and Russian family. As you probably know American children leave parent’s house and live independent life at age 18-20. In comparison with Russian families where children at the same age and even older live with their parents. So when you hear from young lady lives with parents do not be surprised.
But always remember that there is no rule without an exception.
